WIN "The Immortal Game"
Random House brought chess to the attention of the general public September 5, when David Shenk's The Immortal Game hit the charts. The book explores chess history and how chess has affected history. It has been well received by chess players as well as those who know nothing about chess. When you get a chance, simply stop at the Chess Club at Hexacon XVI and play a game of chess against anyone. USCF membership is not required. Play as many games as you want throughout the weekend and report the results after each game. Each win counts as a point. Only one result per day against the same opponent can count. Sunday morning the The Immortal Game will be awarded to the player with the most points.
OUR GUEST OF HONOR - IM Kim commons
A CA resident, International Master Kim Commons will play a consultation game against a team composed of all who wish to have input into the game. The game will take place at 1 PM on Saturday. He will also be available for answering questions and otherwise having fun with chess. He was a candidate for the US Championship and participated in the World Championship cycle many years ago, when he was one of very few American players with International titles. He has since retired from active tournament play, but maintains a strong master's ability through the Internet, speed chess and informal games. He can often be found at the Red Owl Sports Grill in Tempe where he is available, when in Arizona, to play against anyone who wants a game.
USCF RATED GAMES
Anyone who wants to play for US Chess Federation (USCF) rating and is willing to play under the existing conditions will be able to play under the direction of a USCF Tournament Director at no charge other than the Hexacon entry and USCF dues (if not a current member).
ARE YOU IN A HURRY OR UNEVENLY MATCHED?
If so, stop by the Chess Club at Hexacon XVI. You can play chess based on your own available time. The time controls can be adjusted to your requirements. If you only have 10 minutes of free time, try a speed chess game where each player has only 5 minutes. If you are playing someone much stronger or weaker than yourself, the clocks can be set to play at time odds.
NEED A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK?
Try "Chess 4 Funtm", a variant that uses three dice along with a chess set to introduce the element of chance, while providing instruction and understanding of basic chess concepts.
CHESS AS A WAR GAME
Kriegspiel is a variation of chess where the players see only their own pieces and do not know the position or strength of their opposition. They must develop their own intelligence. It transforms chess into a realistic war game.
PLAY AS PARTNERS
Bughous - A variation where teams of two players each play opposite colors on two adjacent boards. When a piece is captured on one board, it is given to the capturer's partner on the other board who can put it in play on that board. You get to use what you capture to your own team's advantage
Crazyhouse - A single board version of Bughouse. "Neo-Chess", the old 3M commercial version, may be used.
Information about the U.S. Chess Federation, the U.S. Open events, Chess in Arizona, chess as a tool for prevention, and other aspects of chess will be available at the Chess Club at Hexacon XVI.
