| The long awaited sequel to An Ice Cold Grave. After the disturbing events in North Carolina, Harper and Tolliver make their way to Texas to visit their two younger sisters. On the way they stop to do a simple job - determine how family patriarch Rich Joyce died. But the job turns into more than they expect when Harper finds that family employee, Marshia, died from childbirth complications. As they try to put the case behind them and reconnect with their young sisters they find themselves drawn into their own family’s dysfunctional past and a mystery that has haunted Harper for years. This book is more character-driven than plot-driven. We get glimpses into Harper and Tolliver’s unpleasant past and the still, in many ways, dysfunctional family. In some ways, the ending felt like a series conclusion but I hope I am wrong. I still find Harper and Tolliver and the assorted secondary characters they meet to be a compelling read. In fact, I read this book beginning to end in one sitting. Highly recommended and I can only hope for more to come. ~ Stephanie L Bannon |
