Department Nineteen
by Will Hill
Razorbill Books, $17.99, 440pp
This is the first book in a trilogy. The various departments are in the U.K. government and are listed in the preface.

Jamie sees something when his father comes home very agitated. Creatures are all around the house and he is sure they mean to harm them. When his father is killed by government agents and the official story comes out he becomes sullen and withdrawn. He is seen by others as an object of scorn and ridicule and is involved in almost constant fighting.

Then he discovers the truth: monsters are real and his dad was killed because of them. His mom is captured by the vampires and he attempts to find her. He is allied by the mysterious department nineteen and by Frankenstein. Frankenstein has been involved with the department for a long time and knew members of Jamie’s family in the past.

The story is a fairly straightforward young adult mystery with fantasy/horror elements. Jamie being sixteen there is the usual teenage angst and naiveté. I am interested in where the story goes but it does drag in places.
